The meticulously planned Roman honeymoon of an aspiring pencil-pushing bureaucrat and his naïve, provincial wife becomes hilariously unhinged when she sneaks off to deliver a gift to the “White Sheik,” the dashing star of her romantic photoplay magazines. Comic great Alberto Sordi, is unforgettable as the real-life pompous, blow-hard “Sheik” who strings along the gullible girl on an all-day adventure, leaving her frantic husband to conceal her absence from their inquisitive relatives. Racing along with all the anarchy of a screwball comedy, Fellini’s debut feature is also an affectionate portrait of innocence overwhelmed by a jaded modern world.
