The Muskegon Museum of Art’s 82nd Regional Exhibition, the longest-standing regional art exhibition in Michigan, opens at 10:00 am, May 27 and runs through August 25, 2010. The public is invited to an opening reception on Thursday, May 27, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Artist awards will be presented starting at 7:00 pm. Reception admission is free.

The annual juried exhibition provides an opportunity to recognize both amateur and professional artists in the region and is a cultural tradition known for its competitive nature and for its professional presentation. Most of the artwork in the exhibition is available for sale.

Entry was open to West Michigan and Lansing area amateur and professional artists. During registration days earlier this month, 361 artists entered a total of 622 artworks for juror consideration. From these, guest juror, Detroit artist Jim Nawara, selected 145 works by 117 artists for the exhibition. The selected artwork includes paintings, photographs, fiber art, prints, drawings, and sculpture. Nawara is also a professor of art at Wayne State University, Detroit, where he has taught since 1969. A different juror is invited to participate in the selection process each year.

2010 Juror
Painter and printmaker Jim Nawara has been part of the Detroit art scene for more than 35 years. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and completed his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and printmaking at the University of Illinois. In 1969 he accepted a teaching appointment at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, where he is currently professor of art. His prints, drawings and paintings have been shown in a long list of national and international group exhibitions over the past two decades. Additionally, he has had several solo exhibitions, including an exhibition of his landscape paintings entitled Overviews and Afterlands at the MMA in the latter part of 2007. Nawara’s work has been acquired for numerous museum and university collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Boston Museum of Fine Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Butler Institute of American Art, and the National Air and Space Museum, Washington, D.C. His work has focused on landscape views, based on observation and interests in geology, cartography and archaeology.

The 82nd Regional Exhibition is underwritten by the DTE Energy Foundation. Artist cash awards are provided, in part, by Fifth Third Bank. Media sponsors are Blue Lake Public Radio and The Muskegon Chronicle.
