The Muskegon Museum of Art’s 83rd Regional Exhibition, the longest-standing regional art exhibition in Michigan, opens for public viewing Thursday, May 26 at 10:00 a.m. The public is invited to an opening reception that evening from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Reception admission is free. The Regional Exhibition will run through August 3, 2011.
The annual juried exhibition provides an opportunity to recognize both amateur and professional artists in the region and is a cultural tradition known for its competitive nature and for its professional presentation. Much of the artwork in the exhibition is available for sale.
Entry was open to West- to mid-Michigan area artists. During registration days earlier this month, 332 artists submitted a total of 542 works for juried competition. From these, guest juror Susan Visser, Executive Director of the South Bend Museum of Art, selected 193 works by 153 artists for the exhibition. Both amateur and professional artists are represented in the MMA Regional. The show comprises artwork in many mediums, themes, and styles.
Presenting sponsor for the 83rd Regional Exhibition is the DTE Energy Foundation. The show is co-sponsored by Shape Corporation with additional support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Blue Lake Public Radio, and The Muskegon Chronicle.
