Celebrating Contemporary Women Artists
ArtSmarts is a lecture series presented at the Muskegon Museum of Art by the Friends of Art. The 2019 Spring lectures complement Rising Voices: The Bennett Prize for Women Figurative Realist Painters. The series begins May 8.

Contemporary Women Artists

Suzanne Eberle will discuss how and why contemporary art has been broadened and deeply enriched by women artists. Suzanne Eberle, Ph.D. is a professor at Kendall College of Art & Design and a member of the Sculpture Advisory Committee at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
The Bennett Collection

Steven Bennett, avid art collector and founder of The Bennett Prize, will discuss his collecting and provide insight into the goals of founding the Prize. Bennett and his wife Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt are art collectors who specialize in realist paintings of women by women artists. Steven Bennett has been an attorney his entire professional life, leading legal departments. He retired in September 2015 as executive vice president, chief legal officer, and corporate secretary of USAA.
The Bennett Prize

Art Martin, MMA Director of Collections and Exhibitions/Senior Curator, will discuss the organization of the exhibition Rising Voices: The Bennett Prize for Women Figurative Realists, including insights into the jurying process. He will also provide a critique of the works in the show, discussing their visual and thematic components. Art Martin holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Drake University and an MFA in Painting from Wichita State University. He joined the MMA in 2001 as the Collections Manager and is now the Senior Curator and Director of Collections and Exhibitions.
