Join us for a special evening with Dr. Hubert Massey, the artist who created What Defines Muskegon, the large-scale mural and newest commission by the Muskegon City Public Art Initiative to be installed this fall at the Mercy Health Arena.
The mural was inspired by a wide-ranging, diverse group of people participating in community forums early in 2021 sharing what they think defines Muskegon. The mural tells the story of Muskegon—the presence of indigenous Ottawa peoples, the lumbering and industrial waves, the impact of the Great Migration on our community from the 1930s that helped to fuel Muskegon’s remarkable contribution to the war years of the 1940s, and, finally, the transformation of our community to the vibrant and diverse place rich with opportunity, culture, and a natural environment like no other, a place we all call home.
Dr. Massey is a recipient of the Kresge Fine Arts Award. His mural locations include the Flint Institute of the Arts, the Detroit Athletic Club, and Grand Valley State University.
