REPLAY: The Exhibition
The Brick is Back!
Sculptures by award winning LEGO® brick artists The Collective return to the Muskegon Museum of Art in Replay: The Exhibition. Featuring plastic LEGO brick sculptures by The Collective, a team of collaborative sculptors, this exhibition is an examination and celebration of American Pop and Geek culture.
Eleven large-scale LEGO brick sculptures comprise the core of the show, including depictions of Alice from Disney’s animated Alice in Wonderland, Goofy frozen in carbonite, a Rubik’s Cube, a Tie Fighter with a starfish for a wing (Tide Fighter), and an oversized soft serve ice cream cone.
Adding painting, photography, and mixed media pieces into the mix, the show explores how iconic cartoon, video game, movie, and comic heroes and villains shape our shared culture. These figures are our modern myths, and visitors are invited to share in the delight of recognition and nostalgia and simultaneously enjoy slightly twisted takes on popular characters. For the viewer, the Millenium Falcon drops into the duck-filled sky of a modified thrift store painting, Pikachu peers out from a classic Dutch floral still-life, Donald Duck dines with Darth Vader, and Pac-Man races across the surface of multiple images around the gallery.
Exhibiting artists include: Don Morris, Isabelle Bergot, Curtis M Gannon, Oscar Gutierrez, Dina Belenko, Michael Loeb, John Padlo, Jared Yamahata, YoMeryl, Nathaniel St. Amour, The Collective, Greg Guillemin, Dave Pollot, and Karlo Henry Velazquez.
An area for kids of all ages to build their own creations will accompany this wonderful show for the entire family.
