REPLAY: The Exhibition
The Brick is Back!
Sculptures created with LEGO® bricks return to the Muskegon Museum of Art in Replay: The Exhibition. The show is an examination and celebration of American Pop and Geek culture through the paintings, photography, and sculpture of a diverse group of artists. For the viewer, the Millenium Falcon drops into the duck-filled sky of a modified thrift store painting, Pikachu peers out from a classic Dutch floral still-life, Donald Duck dines with Darth Vader, and Pac-Man races across the surface of multiple images around the gallery. In portraying these familiar characters in unfamiliar ways, the artists explore how iconic cartoon, video game, movie, and comic heroes and villains shape our shared culture. These figures are our modern myths, and visitors are invited to share in the delight of recognition and nostalgia and simultaneously enjoy slightly twisted takes on popular characters.
In response to the paintings and photographs, The Collective, a team of collaborative sculptors, have created LEGO brick sculptures to enhance the themes presented throughout the show. Through these added voices, images leap from the walls to inhabit the gallery floor and deepen our experience.
Beneath the fun and whimsy, Replay reveals the enduring impact that artists and designers make on our shared popular culture, and the joy that art can bring.
