The Muskegon Museum of Art is renowned for its fine permanent collection of American and European paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. Regularly on view in the permanent collection galleries, you will find works by notable artists such as John Steuart Curry, Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Elizabeth Catlett, Pierre Bonnard, and more.
The MMA studio glass collection is among the finest in the Midwest, featuring artists such as Dale Chihuly, Harvey Littleton, Dominick Labino, Sonja Blomdahl and Debora Moore.
The Museum also features many rotating exhibitions throughout the year, ranging from exhilarating national traveling exhibitions to contemporary regional and Michigan artist shows. Educational programs, such as lectures, films, workshops, classes, and gallery tours have been key to the mission of the Muskegon Museum of Art since its founding in 1912.
History
The Muskegon Museum of Art, originally known as the Hackley Art Gallery, was founded in 1912 through a bequest from Charles Hackley, a prominent lumber baron who invested heavily in Muskegon’s post-lumber boom recovery. Although Hackley did not live to see the gallery built, he left a $150,000 expendable trust in his will for the acquisition of “pictures of the best kind,” known as the Hackley Picture Fund. By 1910, the Muskegon Public Schools Board of Education decided to construct a museum-quality facility to house the growing collection.
The museum, renamed the Muskegon Museum of Art in 1980 following a major expansion, has since developed into one of the Midwest’s most prestigious art institutions. Faced with space constraints for its extensive growing collection, the museum broke ground on a $15 million expansion project in 2024, set to double its size with new galleries, classrooms, a museum store, and additional storage. The expansion project is expected to be completed in early 2025.
