Rowing Past the Shrines of the Ancestors During the Forty-Seventh Biannual Festival of Lights on Pickerel Lake

El Paso, Texas painter, Annabel Livermore, is a native of West Michigan. She is the alter ego of sculptor, poet, and Fremont, Michigan native James R. Magee. Annabel’s burgeoning career and international exhibition history has generated considerable attention from curators and scholars across the country. The MMA contributed to this scholarship through its 2010 exhibition, Remembering Newaygo County: The Symbolist Paintings of Annabel Livermore, of which Rowing Past the Shrines was the signature work. The painting also best represents the convergence of Annabel/Magee on matters of framing. This substantial frame is one of their most elaborate and reflects the history of frames in both America and Europe.
