School Field Trips

Bring your students to the MMA for an engaging experience that fosters both creativity and critical thinking. While visiting the MMA, students are encouraged to look deeper, question more and think bigger!

All grade levels and subjects are welcome as each school group experience is tailored to be grade-level appropriate, inspire engagement, and work alongside basic curriculum. Complete the form below to submit your request.

Field trip tours are always FREE for schools, pre-registration is required! All field trip experiences last 60-90 minutes. Additional activities offered with some tours.

GENERAL TOUR | All Ages

  • Welcome to MMA Tour of the galleries

MOUSE PAINT | Pre-K – 1st Grade

Red mouse, blue mouse, and yellow mouse, too! Bring your students to learn about primary and secondary colors at the MMA. This experience includes story time, a brief look in the galleries, and a hands-on finger painting activity!

EXPERIENCE BREAKDOWN

  • Intro and welcome to the MMA
  • Divide into two groups
    • Group One – Station A: story time + gallery visit with a MMA docent
    • Group Two – Station B: finger painting activity
    • Groups Flip Stations!

ELEMENTS OF ART | 1st – 3rd Grade

Students will learn the 8 Elements of Art! Starting in the auditorium, we will go over each element with an engaging PowerPoint with student participation. After a brief learning activity, MMA docents will take the students to view art in the galleries and apply what they learned!

  • “What are the Elements of Art?” presentation + activity in the auditorium
  • Tour the galleries and apply the elements of art with an MMA docent

PORTRAITURE | 4th – 8th Grade

Students learn about the types of portraiture found throughout art history and explore examples in our galleries! We’ll touch on themes of tradition, personification, and the age of the selfie!

  • “What’s a Portrait?” interactive presentation
  • Explore portraiture in our galleries with an MMA docent
  • Optional portrait making activity in the classroom (additional 30 minutes)

ART TALKS BACK | 5th – College

Only Available January – September

In April, the MMA announces the winner of our Art Talks Back poetry writing competition! The competition melds together our visual art and the literary art of local poets, providing us with an array of poems complementing our permanent collection. Bring your students to experience these two art forms at the MMA!

  • Tour of artworks with accompanying poetry from previous competitions
  • Optional classroom activity: haiku writing (additional 30 minutes)
