Making Connections: Artists Working Across Mediums
October 9, 2026 – April 11, 2027
For many artists, working in their primary medium does not exist in isolation. Ideas often emerge through drawing, painting, printmaking, and experimenting with other creative processes. These methods can serve as a primary testing ground for compositions, forms, colors, and visual ideas that later find their way onto the artist’s canvas or into their casting. Or artists can move in the other direction, and a significant painting or sculpture can spin off additional works on paper. These works offer a glimpse into the creative process, new artistic directions, and the connection between artistic work in different mediums.
Making Connections explores these relationships, bringing together 27 works on paper by 15 artists from the permanent collection in the Frank E. & Flora M. Johnson Family Print Gallery. These works are accompanied by reference images of works in another medium by the same artists, which are also on prominent display throughout the museum in other galleries.
